Owning a tractor makes so many farming tasks much easier and faster to complete. The nice thing about tractors is that they’re rugged and large machines which can navigate challenging terrain, such as muddy fields. However, you may sometimes end up with a tractor that gets mired in the muck if it’s too thick or deep, and then you can’t get anything done. These tips should help you to safely free your tractor from the mire so you can get back to work.

Raise Your Attachments

If your tractor has any attachments or implements on it, raise them up off the ground out of your way and lock them in place with the differential lock.

Shift Back & Forth

Try to first ease your tractor forward with a slow but constant speed to see if you can inch your way out of the mud. If this fails (you’ll know if you feel the wheels spin pointlessly or if the tractor simply doesn’t move), then try to reverse the tractor out instead. Park the tractor if these attempts fail.

Use a Shovel & Boards

If you have some big flat wooden boards, bring them to your tractor and put them behind the wheels to give you some traction. A shovel can help you to dig out mud from around the tires that may help you get free. Attempt reversing up these boards slowly to see if you can get out this way.

Call a Friend

Nothing working for you? It’s time to call one of your fellow farmers to see if they can bring their tractor over to hitch up to your tractor’s draw bar and pull it out. A pickup truck can also be helpful.
