Farm equipment needs to be maintained in order to maximize efficiency and reduce the risk of mechanical failure. However, keeping track of all those maintenance tasks can be a real challenge. Some users find that it’s easier to take farm equipment maintenance part by part. That’s why West Hills Tractor has created this guide to maintaining your farm equipment’s parts.

Know Your Equipment

Even two farm equipment models that appear extremely similar may have some key underlying differences. That’s why it’s so important that you know your farm equipment before you attempt to repair or maintain it. We highly recommend consulting your owner’s manual, as it’s chock full of useful information about maintenance, among other things.

Tires

Tires should be kept within the manufacturer’s recommended pressure range at all times. Keeping an eye on tire tread wear is important since big, bulky farm equipment needs a lot of traction in order to get anywhere. If the tires seem to wear out too quickly or the wearing pattern is uneven, that’s usually a sign that there’s a deeper problem at work.

Engine

Oil, coolant, and hydraulic fluid all help an engine to function at maximum efficiency. You’ll need to top off these fluids on a regular basis and swap out their filters as needed. If you notice a leak, we recommend scheduling a service appointment to get it checked out.

Frame

Dings and scratches are hardly unusual when it comes to a piece of farm equipment’s frame. However, if the damage is extensive enough to threaten the equipment’s structural integrity, you’ll need to get the equipment serviced.

Attachments

Damaged or broken farm equipment attachments should not be used under any circumstances. Not only are they less efficient, but there’s a high chance that they’ll fail and cause an accident. Get all farm equipment attachments repaired before attempting to use them again.

Operator Tools

Buttons, switches, and mirrors are all operator tools, meaning that they are what the operator needs to safely operate the farm equipment. Without them, attempting to use the farm equipment is risky at best. That’s why it's important that you be as thorough when inspecting and maintaining your farm equipment’s interior as you are inspecting the exterior.
