Tips for Safely Operating a Bush Hog®
Bush Hog® cutters are a great tool for clearing heavy brush, allowing your land to be used for more things. However, these machines are powerful and should be used with caution. Our team at West Hills Tractor aims to be a resource for you, so we’ve put together a list of tips for safe operation.
1. Take Your Time
First things first, give yourself time to become familiar with the equipment. Pay attention to the owner’s manual, read through operating instructions, and give yourself room to practice. Learn how to attach and detach your Bush Hog and drive slowly in low gear until you feel comfortable.
2. Start in Low Grass
If possible, it’s easier for yourself and the equipment to begin in low grass and move into the heavy area that needs clearing. Engage the PTO before you begin cutting, ideally in an area that has already been mowed, and then move into the overgrown area.
3. Pay Attention to the Temperature Gauge
Your tractor will be working hard to keep the Bush Hog moving and the amount of debris being cleared can easily clog up the radiator. If you notice the temperature gauge creeping into the red, stop and clear out your radiator. It can be useful to carry a bristle brush or air compressor with you as you work.
4. Keep the Machine Clear of Obstacles and Others
As you operate, it’s crucial to stay away from potentially damaging obstacles. Keep a close eye on your roll bar and your surroundings.
It is also crucial to keep pets and people away from the area you are working in. The blades will be moving fast and small debris can easily be flung in any direction at high speeds.
Be mindful as you make turns! The cutter might stick out more than you realize, so watch the back end of it whenever you make adjustments.
We hope these tips will help you safely and successfully operate your Bush Hog! If you’re interested in upgrading or purchasing new equipment, our Jonesborough team would love to help. We proudly serve Johnson City and Greeneville, TN, and offer great financing options.
